Ezer Mizion's Bone Marrow Donor Registry

When a match is sought for a patient in need of a stem cell transplant, the blood samples at the Registry are checked to determine compatibility between the patient and the potential donor's blood. Further testing reveals whether there is a complete match so that a stem cell transplant can indeed take place.

Since its establishment, the BMDR has made hundreds of life-saving transplants. As it has expanded – it is the largest Jewish registry in the world with close to 265,000 registrants as of January 1, 2007 - its success rate has grown exponentially: One transplant performed in 1998, 15 in 2001, and 40 in 2005 – with that figure doubling to 79 in 2006!

A recent agreement with the Israel Defense Forces to routinely test new recruits promises to dramatically raise the success rate even more – since one out of every 480 registrants proved to be a matching donor for a cancer patient – over 60 times the average rate throughout the world. This astounding result is result attributable to the genetic diversity of Israel’s soldiers, explains Dr. Bracha Zisser, Director of the Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
